Transferring a domain name from one registrar company to another typically involves the use of a special transfer authorization code, which different registrar companies call an EPP authentication code, a domain name password or an Auth-Info code. This code can be used as a security measure against unauthorized transfer attempts with all gTLD and with most ccTLD extensions. It can be obtained only by the domain name owner and is provided by the current registrar. It must be given to the new domain name registrar company because the transfer procedure cannot be initiated without it. The code is case-sensitive and usually contains digits and special characters, so as to prevent unauthenticated people from cracking it. Some domain registrars even change the codes of domain names registered through them after a certain period of time for even better security.
