These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level domains remained online.
